Nandan Nilekani is one of the most influential architects of India’s digital transformation story. As the co-founder of Infosys and the driving force behind Aadhaar, he has played a monumental role in shaping India’s technology infrastructure and digital public ecosystem. His contributions extend far beyond entrepreneurship, making him a respected voice in public policy, digital governance, fintech innovation, and economic inclusion.
After helping build Infosys into one of India’s largest IT companies, Nilekani took on one of the country’s most ambitious public technology projects — Aadhaar. Under his leadership, the Unique Identification Authority of India (UIDAI) developed the world’s largest biometric identity system, fundamentally transforming digital verification, financial inclusion, and welfare delivery mechanisms across the country. Aadhaar later became the foundation for India’s rapidly growing digital economy and fintech revolution.
In recent years, Nilekani has continued advocating for India Stack, open digital networks, and AI-driven public infrastructure. He has consistently emphasized the importance of building scalable digital ecosystems that empower startups, improve governance, and democratize access to services. His work around ONDC (Open Network for Digital Commerce) has also attracted major industry attention as India attempts to decentralize digital commerce platforms.
